Tintagel Castle is set in one of the most spectacular locations on the Cornish coast. Perched high above the Atlantic sea the castle sits within a Site of Special Scientific Interest and an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. As the prestigious seat of Cornish kings and with its literary connection to the legends of King Arthur, Tintagel already attracts over 200,000 British and international visitors every year making this one of our busiest sites.

2018 is set to be an extraordinary one in the castle’s history. Starting in October, we are undertaking a bold and visionary project to restore the link between the mainland and island sections of the castle by building a cantilever bridge. Alongside this, we will be improving footpaths and the operational infrastructure to ensure we can effectively manage the site and provide an outstanding visitor experience. This is a multi-million pound project that will transform the site and the way we run it.

The rugged nature of the site and volume of visitors is an operational challenge that is met on a daily basis by a dedicated team of nearly 40 full and part-time personnel. We need a skilled Operations Manager to lead and motivate that team, ensuring that we continue to provide an exceptional visitor experience and safe environment. You will be responsible for all areas of operational management including driving membership, retail and catering sales; effective staff recruitment, training and deployment; health and safety for staff and the public; strong financial management; maintenance of operational infrastructure and development of a volunteering programme.

You have a strong commitment to the mission and vision of English Heritage and this informs the way that you work. You will relish the prospect of managing a team and you are a skilled communicator, motivator and delegator. You will have an excellent operational knowledge and can manage risk effectively. You are also an efficient administrator that meets deadlines, enjoys the challenge of achieving KPI’s and is willing to dig into the detail to meet budgets. You are a practical, positive, solutions person and you are not afraid to lead the team in trying new ideas.

By joining us you’ll enjoy the rewards of a great team environment and an inspiring location, helping to make our site a wonderful place to visit and work. You’ll also be joining our charity which through our 400 historic monuments, buildings and sites, brings the story of England to life for over 10 million visitors each year.

You’ll find it’s a workplace like no other – taking you behind the scenes of these extraordinary sites and supporting you to share your ideas, inspire others and make a difference.
